Dear Friends,
I am sending this email to share information about a fund raiser project I am spearheading. This project, Project PAC-Nepal 2009, is to raise money for 10 portable altitude chambers (PAC).
Everyone trekking to Everest Base Camp (EBC) is at risk of dying from high altitude illness. The rationale for this project is to decrease the number of trekkers and Nepali guides that die from HAI by providing a way to begin treatment until the person can be taken to a lower elevation. Last spring when I was trekking down from Everest Base Camp, I encountered a man dying from high altitude illness. My group had a PAC bag with us, thanks to the trip organizers, Wilderness Medicine and Travel. By using this specialized piece of equipment for treatment, our patient’s condition reversed and his life was saved. Two days prior, a woman from Japan died from high altitude illness in nearby village. No one had a portable altitude chamber.
My goal is to have a PAC available in high altitude villages along the trekking route to EBC. The money you donate will be used to purchase the bags and to develop and implement a semi-annual training program for Sherpas and Nepali people living in the selected villages who will be responsible for the use of the bag when the need occurs.
There is already international support for this project. It is supported and promoted by the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) Nepal and HRA-USA. The person I cared for, Mohan, is promoting this fundraiser in India. Many of my wilderness medicine compatriots throughout England, Australia, and the US are onboard to inform and encourage people to support this venture. Please know I appreciate anything you can donate. Your contribution is tax deductible. If you want to make a donation and read a brief summary about the patient I took care of, please follow this pathway:

You should now be on my fundraiser page and can make your donation. You can also go to my personal web site, www.wildernesswise.com for a more detailed story, photos, and a list of supporters.
I have an offer from a group in Australia who has volunteered to take 4 bags to Nepal in Nov. This means I need US$6000.00 as soon as possible! Please make a contribution today!
Thank you so much in advance for any contribution you are able to make. As you all know, I have a passion for mountains and for improving the safety for everyone who visits these beautiful places. Please feel free to share this email with your family, friends, and co-workers. I do appreciate your help to spread the information!
And for those of you with a desire to trek to Everest Base Camp, please join me on one of the trips noted below. I will be teaching wilderness medicine and will be delivering the portable high altitude chambers to villages along the trail.
Also, for anyone that can and wants to donate a bag, there will be a plaque with an acknowledgment for your purchase of the bag at the tea house where “your” bag will be placed. Individuals that donate US$1000 will be honored with a plaque as having donated a bag.
Thank you for anything that you can do.
Namasté,
Sheryl Olson
