Everest medical trek

led by Dr Jim Duff and Rejane Belanger

view from Gokyo-Ri

This is a trip designed for doctors and anyone with a medically related background, plus their partners. It is moderately strenuous, requiring a reasonable degree of fitness.

Apart from being a superb trek, this is a great opportunity to experience high altitude, wilderness and travel medicine (QA & CPD program points will be applied for in Australia, eligible for incorporation into individual PGE/CME elsewhere).

The trek to Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri (5483m) is one of the best in the park and avoids the beaten track as much as possible. We will venture through a rich tapestry of Buddhist villages and forest to emerge above the treeline for magnificent views of mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu and Taweche.

The sacred lakes ocampsite by Gokyo lakef Gokyo are one of the highlights of the trek and we have two days exploring the area. This includes an (optional) steep climb to the top of Gokyo Ri for one of the most impressive panoramas of 8000m peaks in the Himalaya. Jim rates the three day descent to Thangboche monastery as one of the best walks on the planet! view from mess tent

On arrival in Kathmandu Jim will present a travel medicine lecture at the Radisson hotel followed by visits to the world famous CIWEC (or NIC) clinic and the Bir (or the Police) hospital. In the mountains we visit the Hillary hospital (Khunde) and the Porter Shelter and Rescue Post at Machermo. There will be a series of short wilderness medicine presentations al fresco, incorporating any clinical cases we happen upon along the way. Finally, Jim will demonstrate the Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC) for the treatment of high altitude illness.
